A Trip to Canterbury, and Way Layed, 30-01-2008
Had a job in Canterbury today, and after making the same trip as few weeks back I was kicking myself for not stopping in Tenterden, when I saw the way the Sun caught the Church Tower and clock, just thought it would make for some great images, so today knowing I had to go that way again, I was going to stop, well that was the plan, though when leaving it had been raining all night, was still cloudy and overcast. Things were looking up as I got closer, the sky was clearing, the sun was starting to creep from behind the clouds, and by time I got to Tenterden it was bright, sunny and blue sky. Luck hits again, parking space right in the centre of the town next to the church. While I was out I saw another opportunity to try out the new 10-17mm Tokina as well, though never was a lover of using a to wider angle lens on really large buildings, it has to capture so much detail over such a large area. One Man & his Dog I know not everyone's cup of tea, I just love weird wide angles Canon 1D MK3 Tokina 10-17mm @ 12mm f9 1/400 ISO 200 Tenterden Church Canon 1D MK3 Canon 16-35mm @ 16mm f6.3 1/160 +0.33 ISO 200 Back to the old Trusty 16-35mm The Clock Canon 1D MK3 Canon 70-200mm @ 200mm f5 1/800 ISO 200 When you get close up, it really does not look that great, more like in need of a coat of metallic paint
While I was taking photographs on the church grounds, I spotted this little Critter, I crouched down and storked it, getting closer and closer, how an earth I never got arrested beats me, creeping around the gravestones, trying not to step on any, crouching down, storking, I am sure looked very suspicious :) in the end he shot up a tree, while I was peering around another tree a bit further back. The Pesky Critter Canon 1D MK3 f2.8 /1250 ISO 200 Canon 70-200 @ 200mm Canon 1D MK3 f2.8 1/3200 ISO 400 Canon 70-200 @ 173mm All the reasons why I love this lens, f2.8 gives a lovely blurred background Canon 1D MK3 f2.8 /1600 ISO 200 Canon 70-200 @ 70mm On the way back to the Van, just took a few more shots. Book Shop High Street Canon 1D MK3 Canon 16-35mm @ 26mm f6.3 1/250 +0.33 ISO 200 Cafe Rouge Canon 1D MK3 Canon 16-35mm @ 35mm f6.3 1/100 +0.33 ISO 200 Shot from across the road, sort of sad now, I can see how a great shot it could have been, if only I had more time to play, but I knew my time was limited and all ready late :( Cafe Rouge, the Cheaty Version Canon 1D MK3 Canon 16-35mm @ 35mm f6.3 1/100 +0.33 ISO 200 I wish I had framed it better and took a few more shots of this, just love the reflections, though with cars passing it was pure luck I timed this shot with no passing traffic Time was getting on, and I had to get on, already late and traffic was a lot heavier, I made my way towards Ashford, had a drop off, and then towards Canterbury, now as luck had it, I went straight on at a roundabout instead of turning right onto the A20, with my mistake I went under the M20, and thought "yep I remember this" I can go towards Faversham, M2, and will drop me down to the north side of Canterbury, saves all the traffic going through the centre, and not too far up the road towards Faversham i saw this looming in front of me! just had to stop again :) Just An Archway Canon 1D MK3 f9 1/320 +0.33 ISO 200 Tokina 10-17mm @ 11mm To be Fair, it is unfair to abuse this lens at 11mm in these conditions, bright sun light will creep into the edges, it was not really designed to be used at that focal length on a 1.3 crop, in fact it was it is not designed to work on a 1.3 crop at all :(. Why an earth Canon cannot make a suitable UWA lens for their 1.3's is really annoying, they do for all their other bodies, but I just love the warped angles you get with it. I suppose you should be starting at like 12mm at least to stop the vignetting around the edges. Canon 1D MK3 f9 1/160 +0.33 ISO 200 Tokina 10-17mm @ 11mm Shame there were a couple of cars parked under the archway ruined some shots :( I would have liked to have shot. I named this shot, as my shadow reminded me of the Get Wally books, or was it Find Wally. Get Wally Moving on again just up the road i had to turn around again after spotting this gravestone memorial on a green. I took some normal shots, but the houses around the green in the back ground annoyed me, so I went for it! getting wet, dirty, and muddy, laid on the ground to get a really low angle upwards, the other reason I was attracted to this clouds, unusual Clouds in the sky for a change today, fluffy and low Canon 1D MK3 Canon 16-35mm @ 35mm f13 1/100 +0.33 ISO 200 What I really should have done now I look at the shots, was to shoot a couple at f2.8 to see if I could have lost some of the back ground, but with such a wide angle I guess the back ground was at infinity anyhow, maybe used a bigger lens. I did shoot this image at f2.8, before I cropped it there was a foreground of grass that I wanted blurred, but it did not have the desired effect I had in mind. I left on my way to my final destination, job done. Great weather, more learning, more images :) I will add a gallery for the trip, with a few more images. © Brett Butler |
