Chichester Trip 07-08-2008 I had to do some work near Chichester City centre, with finishing early, and the added bonus of the weather improving, the sun shining against clear blue skies, I might add against the so called weather forecast I decided to drive into the centre of Chicheter and have a wander. I parked up, and off I went, It has been a long time since I had ventured into the Town/City of Chichester, and soon discovered it is really quite small in the centre, with the main attraction being the Cathedral and surrounding buildings. I have never actually taken any photographs inside a church, and as it was open to the public I wandered in. At the entrance I saw some official looking person and asked if I could take some photographs inside, they welcomed it, and asked that I not use a Flash near the or pointed at the Tapestries. The Cathedral was quite duanting, massive being the more optimum word, with its high towers, monuments, wonderful tapestries and paintings, it took forever shooting in there, so many subjects. The lighting was really trying, very dark in places and with the out side bright sunlight very bright in other places, all the shots I took were hand held, no flash used at all, I felt it would be quite insulting going around and flashing every where, and I did take over 150 images in all. I was lucky to have my fast primes with me, so tried ot use thme caefullt wide or near open to keep the ISO down, and hand held slow as possible if need be. I was approached by one Minister/Guide not sure how to describe him really, but was he very interested and helpful in pointing out the important relevant parts of the building, We had quite a long chat regarding photograghy as well as the buildings. I am quite often taken for a professional photographer and he did ask what I intended to do with the images, the impression I got if I intended to use commercially a donation would be appreciated etc. which is fair enough I guess, though I have no intension's of selling even if I could. Time was getting on now, and I was aching after straining to get roof shots and various angles in the Cathedral that I took a few UWA out side and made my way back to the van, hit a Pub for a Carvary, and headed home. I got to say it was a great learning experience, as well as getting a few good images, very hard to shoot in those conditions with care taken to try and keep some details in the whites, while not having to many dark shadows, I would recommend any Photographer to visit if local, a lot to be had there. © Brett Butler 2008 |
